is the government rule there putting a damper on everyday life there? what about for us tourists?

Well the military general that became the Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is supposedly cracking down hard on many things. Focusing on foreigner nightlife areas (closing them strictly by 2am) and a few minor things. Nothing that a tourist should say "Oh i'm not going to Thailand now" for

Don't forget the visa laws too, but as a tourist as long as you get a tourist visa from your own country before coming here, then you should be fine
